We caught the Edinburgh tram to pick up our rental car at the airport. Then we drove to Rosslyn Chapel. This is a brilliant spot and we caught the excellent 11.00 am talk. The architecture and carvings are brilliant. Effectively the place has been saved twice: once by Queen Victoria and once by Dan Brown and Hollywood. Public interest equals money. The restorations continue.
I loved the incredible detail in the stonework. Gargoyles, Green Men, knights, flowers, dragons, sinners and angels, all jostle for space.
No photography was allowed inside so here is the famous Apprentice Pillar from the internet. It comes with a tale of murder. (Everywhere in this country has a murder story it seems.)
Afterwards we wandered into Roslin Glen to see the ruined castle.
Then it was time to drive to Melrose but we hadn't gone far when a friendly motorist tapped on our window to tell us that a piece of our car's undercarriage was hanging down and bouncing on the road. So back we drove to Edinburgh to get another car.
Eventually, after a beautiful drive through the countryside, we reached Melrose. We shopped and then walked along the river.
