Unicorns

We arrived this afternoon at Stirling Castle to discover that it had been captured by hordes of small Scots wearing fairy dresses and puffy jackets. They were looking at the two unicorns, eating ice cream, colouring in, sitting on canon, squealing and rolling down hills. This is what happens when you try to make historical sites child friendly- fun breaks out.

Many of the staff were dressed in early 15th century finery and everybody was very jolly. We explored the palace, walls, kichens and Argyll Highlanders museums. There were excellent displays and informative small films. There were lots of weird wooden heads which had once decorated the palace ceiling. We were stunned to learn that the unicorn tapestries we had seen in the queen's rooms were real. They had been painstakingly woven in recent years. The first alone took two years!

On the castle walls we looked down at the river where William Wallace made the English think again and looked beyond to where the Highlands begin.

We ended our day by catching a fast train back to Edinburgh.  Tomorrow we leave Edinburgh and take to Scotland's roads.
