SCOTTISH
Given the weather, we stayed close to home. We did a walk through the remains of the great Roman military base of Trimontium. Information boards do their best but all that remains are dents in green fields.
The Romans were here, well north of the famous Hadrians Wall, for a couple of centuries but eventually decided, "Yeah, Nah" and headed South.
Lyn was determined to find the old viaduct we'd seen in the distance yesterday. We found both it, another historic bridge at the furthest point of our walk. The rain-swollen Tweed rushed beneath.
Back in Melrose, we went to Melrose Abbey which was under restoration and so not very exploratory. Then I went to the good little Trimontium Museum and Lyn explored the local op shop.
After lunch we went to Abbotsford House, the home of Sir Walter Scott. This is a fanciful Scottish Baronial pile filled with Scott's stuff. It was interesting and the grounds were damply beautiful.
Lyn yearns to see more historic bathrooms and kitchens. However, it turns out that such things rarely survive because, when you think about it, what part of any house gets modernised first?
