Remember the Lusitania

I took us on a Lusitania walk.

In 1915 Kapitan Schwieger of the U-21 identified a 4-funnelled ship 11 miles off the coast of Kinsale. He knew that the only ships of that type were 3 famous British passenger liners. Hit by a single torpedo, Lusitania sank in 18 minutes with dreadful loss of life. The coroner in Kinsale's dinky 17th century courthouse declared the deaths to be 'wilful murder'.

The Lusitania story is immensely complex but I've always thought it marks the real beginning of the 20th century.

In the churchyard there are reminders.

  1. Lyn - We have a family member who was a seaman on board when it went down. His postcard sent from the Lusitania arrived home in England. But he didn't.
