Puffin Free Zone

Our small tour group of 6 walked from our BnB into Kirkwall for a brief orientation tour by our tour leader. There are two ruined palaces and the impressive St Magnus Cathedral.

St Magnus was murdered by his brother. This being Scotland I don't find this surprising. That he achieved sainthood, however, is worthy of note. Lyn liked the graveyard and I liked the interior decoration of medieval gravestones with their macabre carvings.

There was a very early grave marker which looks to be that of a crusader.

Then we browsed the shops till lunch.

After lunch we took a taxi out to a tidal island called the Brough of Birsay. The geology of this place is tortured strata of Devonian sandstone. The result is cliffs which are ideal for nesting seabirds. Sadly, there were no puffins.

There are the ruins of a Norse monastery.

Nearby there are the ruins of a Stuart ruler's palace.

The Brough of Birsay is a tidal island. You can only visit in the four hours when the tide is at its lowest.

It was all a bit of an adventure - but no puffins.
