"Hold Fast" is the motto of the MacLeods of Dunvegan Castle. Their prized relic is the Fairy Flag, a badly faded and disintegrating piece of 4th Century silk which comes with various stories of crusaders and lullaby-singing fairies. We saw the castle and gardens today and managed to stay out of the rain most of the time.
The castle sits on the edge of a loch. Like most castles, bits are very old and other bits are the products of centuries of home improvement. This one was well presented and came with good stories, including the usual murder.
Once outside, we discovered the rain had stopped so Lyn insisted on extensive exploration of the damp but admittedly spectacular gardens. There were lots of rhododendrons but most were not yet in flower.
I even discovered an elaborate sundial. Our experiences of Scotland on this trip would suggest that it is more ornamental than useful.
After lunch we went shopping in Portree which is pretty, though prettier when dry.
