Windsor (eventually)

At about this point in our day we couldn’t quite credit we had arrived. We flew Bangkok to Dubai and then Dubai to Heathrow. Lyn didn’t sleep at all despite the night-time flights. At Heathrow I had to make two calls to 3 Mobile before I got my mobile sorted. Then we waited an age for Avis to work through their queue before Lyn drove and I navigated to Windsor. We struggled for a parking spot for an eternity, walked down a lane and there was the Thames!

We wandered around Windsor Castle a little stunned by the scale of it all. For all the gaudy grandeur of the state apartments I was most struck by the fact that the royal bed was only half the size of the one we’d last slept in at Bangkok. There were lots of mostly bad paintings by famous painters. Richard III was there in the pose made famous in Tey’s The Daughter of Time. Queen Mary’s doll house was wonderfully indulgent.

Everywhere there were signs of last-minute repairs in preparation for the wedding. St George’s Chapel was spectacular but Lyn and I were flagging fast.

On we drove to the Cotswolds. We’ve finally arrived at our cottage in Stow-on-the-Wold. More about this in later posts. We have some serious sleep to catch up.
