It was a beautiful morning at last so we drove the Slea Head circuit at the end of the Dingle Peninsula. First stop was Dunbeg Fort which was built in the early middle ages and was more impressive before half of it fell into the sea. The process is still going on despite the fierce guardian cat called Chester. Rescued in a pitiable state 4 years ago, the fort is his favourite haunt.
Most of the photos are of Slea Head and the Blasket Islands. The excellent Blasket Centre told the story of the islanders, the last of whom left in1953. Ironically, most seem to have emigrated over the previous century to Springfield, Massachusetts. It seems that living in one of the planet's most beautiful places is no compensation for hard work and poverty.
Our final morning stop was at the Gallarus Oratory - an 8th century Christian church. It may not seem much but despite being built without mortar it doesn't leak. In this climate that's quite an achievement for something built 1300 years ago.
