Behind a hearse to Sparta

We met up with Vicky and Jim at breakfast. The view out the windows was great – a ship was sailing by ... They came to our room later and we chatted. They were off to GB for 6 months study leave and Jim gave us his address in Athens. They are very nice and from Newcastle. He has relatives in Athens and he is staying with them and making short trips...

The discussion was mostly dominated by discussions of Greek culture. (The attitude of Greek men to women was insufferable. Greek fashion for women was black with a little red. Nobody had any change and everybody wanted to do a deal. Inflation was 25%.)

We left Nafplion for Sparti. The route took us over the mountains. The switchbacking road was dotted with shrines remembering road fatalities. Worse ... we were stuck behind a hearse most of the way.
Looking back at the road from Nafplio to Sparti

I got excited as we climbed (our Nissan Cherry climbed) over the pass into Lakonia. The bed of the River Eurotas was nearly dry and littered with garbage – sacrilege! Sparti was not pretty like Nafplion – but large and prosperous.

Arrived in Sparti and booked in. Room has carpet! A balcony! We are able to cook! I had a sleep! Leon tried to go to the museum – just closing – but he did find the Post Office and OTC office for us to call Josh the next day.
