Our room in the hotel wasn't ready so we ate lunch in the park and then went to the Tourist Office. A nice young man recommended three local bus trips! We caught the #5 to village of Villeneuve just across the Rhone River.
Inevitably, it was picturesque. (Train rides take us through plenty of dismal looking suburbs but we haven't crossed the planet to look at them.)
We climbed up towards the castle. Halfway up the slope, Lyn stopped to do some stretches, much to the amusement of a French family behind her. They commented jokingly and Lyn proceeded to have an extended conversation, mostly with grandad who was clearly a nice man, who was also clearly charmed by the Australian lady. When Lyn's French stumbled, the younger members of the family helped out. She really has done extraordinarily well this trip and the locals clearly appreciate her efforts.
The town obviously has many historic sites. However, the young man in the tourist office had emphasised the views, so we chose to explore the castle.
This was built when the French king decided that planting a castle to overlook the bridge across the Rhone was an excellent point to make to both the Pope in Avignon and Provencals in general.
It really did have great views.
The castle was amazing too.
Inside there was an amazing old Romanesque chapel.
On the way back down the hill, Lyn insisted on photos which included cars.
We caught bus #5 back into Avignon. Lyn decided that this was an excellent time to buy pyjama pants - an experience which gave her great joy.
