Roman Around Provence

Provence is called 'Provence' because it was a Roman province. We took a half-day tour to visit some special places. We were the only two of the trip so we got a private guide experience for a small-group tour price. Excellent!

First stop was Nimes. The gardens there were beautiful.

Off to one side were the ruins of a Roman temple. It featured Roman arches, but we were about to see many more!

Elsewhere in Nimes was a more intact, and very large Roman temple. Next to it was much more recent architecture.

Still further on, there was a magnificent Roman amphitheatre which is still used for bullfighting. The original builders would have approved I'm sure.

After a short drive, our next stop was the town of Uzes.

The impression of entering some sort of medieval film set was quickly dispelled when we arrived at the Saturday markets!

We wandered about, purchased some fougasse from a nice man, and found the church.

The grand finale of the tour was a short drive away. The awesome Pont du Gard has to be seen to be believed. It is one of those ancient engineering constructions so astounding that photographs do it no justice. The setting is amazing too.

It was a terrific tour. We were driven back to Avignon, had lunch and a nap.

We went for a wander around Avignon's back streets and found the old waterwheels.

Dinner is salad for Lyn and blue cheese, olives, potato chips and red wine for me. Guess who's the healthy one.
