18 September Rome to Sicily

Old is shabby if you are in Rome's Airport Hilton but old is romantic and full of character if you are in Ortygia, Siracusa.

We at least enjoyed a good breakfast at the Hilton and an easy walk on the connecting walkways to the terminal.

In the terminal a pianist kept us entertained.

The flight was fuss free and we landed in a sun-baked Catania to be greeted by our guide and three fellow travellers.

The drive through Catania was not inspiring but Etna looked impressive and very close. Crossing from modern Siracusa to the historic district on Ortygia Island is uplifting. The trash, dust, shopping districts and derelict buildings suddenly disappear and there is the Mediterranean Sea.

Our room looks out on a stone Fort and the water. Lyn and I took ourselves for a walk along the seafront and then napped.

The only downside was that I managed to accidentally poke Lyn in the eye while unpacking. The eyelid is a little swollen and uncomfortable which is upsetting for her.

In the evening we had aperitivo on the rooftop and watched a red moon rising over the sea.

The night finished with an excellent vegetarian meal in the hotel. A great start, if only the eye is OK.
