Lyn really hates tunnels in the way that sane people hate Brown Snakes or Funnelweb spiders. Which means that today was her special triumph. Our small group tour was by minivan to the Dolomites. The route was as often through mountains as over them. The stunning scenery and constant conversation with our driver and American fellow travellers kept her sane enough to cope.
We stopped at a dam, and Titian’s home town. His house was probably impressive a few centuries ago. Lyn lit a candle in the local church and on we went. Everywhere we drove had been traversed by the Giro d’Italia only days before so the roads were decorated with pink balloons, rosettes and painted bicycles.
There were several stops for photos. The weather was glorious. We walked through Cortina d’Ampezzo and even stopped to see the ruined old ski jump from the olympics there many years ago.
There was a little rain as we drove back down the mountains and then the sunshine returned. We returned to Venice and caught the Vaporetto home.
