The Coromandel Coast is spectacular. It was raining when we woke this morning. We had a great breakfast courtesy of our hosts Barry and Heather and then we went exploring. After a short walk along Hahei Beach together, Lyn dropped me at the start of the Cathedral Cove walk. She then drove off to walk around Cooks Landing and the ferry crossing to Whitianga. I walked into Cathedral Cove as the showers disappeared and found that this beautiful place had been discovered by a couple of hundred other holiday makers.

When Lyn came back to fetch me we had lunch at a cafe she had found near the ferry. Once again we failed to finish the chips! Next we headed for Tairua for a little shopping and then back to Mercury Orchard to change into swimmers.
The plan was to go to Hot Water Beach around low tide. You take a spade, dig a hole in the sand and sit in the thermal hot water which wells up from below. Fascinating concept, though Lyn said she felt just a bit silly carrying a spade to the beach.
We arrived to find more hordes (see photo). We saw and felt the (very) hot water but didn't feel the need to fight for space to dig our own hole. Instead I caught some really good waves and Lyn snoozed in the sun.
We are now relaxing with pinot noir and nibblies ...
